Police have seized a concoction of drugs, cash and a firearm following separate traffic stops in Auckland overnight.
The first driver signalled Police interest as his hatchback sped through Penrose.
At this point it was 8.30pm on a Wednesday night.
“A Road Policing Unit was patrolling along Church Street, when a Suzuki Swift was detected travelling 20 km/h over the posted speed limit,” Senior Sergeant Dave Plunkett, Auckland City Road Policing, says.
The vehicle was pulled over and stopped.
“Approaching the vehicle, the constable could smell the unmistakable smell of cannabis wafting from the hatchback.”
Police invoked a further search of the vehicle, locating the cannabis, drug utensils, $1400 in cash and an imitation firearm. On top of that, methamphetamine was also found inside the vehicle.
The 24-year-old man will appear in the Auckland District Court today charged with possession for supply of methamphetamine, possession for supply of cannabis, unlawfully carrying an imitation firearm, and possession of cannabis utensils.
Hours later, another vehicle caught Police attention further north in Dairy Flat.
A unit stopped a Subaru Legacy at around 11.10pm.
Senior Sergeant Carl Fowlie, Waitematā North Area Response Manager, says staff were speaking with all three occupants when they picked up a strong odour of cannabis.
“Police have carried out a search of the car and come across a firearm, ammunition and a quantity of bagged cannabis inside,” he says.
All up, Police seized a .22 calibre rifle, a prohibited magazine, a knife, a shot gun round and more than 100 rounds of ammunition.
Police arrested the driver, a 19-year-old man, and he has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of a prohibited magazine, possession of an offensive weapon, and possession of cannabis for supply.
He will appear in the North Shore District Court next week.
“It’s a good result, particularly getting the firearm and illegal drugs out of the community,” Senior Sergeant Fowlie says.
