The purpose of this chapter is to: explain all factors to be considered to determine leaving employment with Police on health grounds on either a compulsory or voluntary basis; clarify the procedures involved and accountability for key steps in the process; and document the procedure for requesting review of a declined application to voluntarily leave Police on health grounds.

This chapter details key provisions in the Coroners Act 2006, Police responsibilities as agents of the Coroner, and the Police practices for responding to deaths. It is designed as a base chapter for sudden death procedures to be read in conjunction with other chapters for specialist groups who also have a role with sudden deaths, i.e., National Crime Group (Homicide and Serious Crime Investigations), Dive Squad, Search and Rescue and Disaster Victim Identification.

These chapters provide instructions and guidance on the operational use of force. Some parts of these chapters have been considered not appropriate for release and, if requested, would be withheld under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). In these chapters, the relevant sections of the Act that would apply have been identified.

This chapter sets out the key principles guiding Police's response to family harm episodes and details procedures and guidance for the initial response to family harm. It also includes information on longer term safety, support and intervention, and a model for active case management; includes information about monitoring, evaluation and training; and provides policy on Police employees and family harm.
