New Zealand Police and Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand (FSE) have a Working Arrangement and an Information Sharing Agreement to guide the relationship between the agencies from 23 September 2026.

Under the Arms Act 2026, the Commissioner of Police must provide certain services and support to FSE to enable it to carry out its functions as the firearms regulator, because of the Police role as the host agency. 

The Agencies also require a clear framework for when information can be shared, who can access it, and what safeguards apply.

Health New Zealand and New Zealand Police have agreed the next step for Phase Four of the Police Mental Health Response Change Programme, which will see handover times reduced from 60 minutes to 30 minutes. Initially Phase Four looked at reducing handover times from 60 minutes to 15 minutes when a person detained under the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992 is brought into the Emergency Department by Police.
