Three days after Christmas on 28 December 1998, the decomposing body of David Robinson was found with a single gunshot to the forehead, on a remote West Coast beach near Ross in the South Island. David had been killed execution-style. It’s believed he had been killed approximately ten days before the grisly discovery.

Police need your help to locate the weapon that was used in David’s murder or any information on where it has been disposed. It’s believed it was a 22 calibre gun, likely a rifle.

Police want to hear from anyone - including visitors or hunters - who may have heard a gunshot in the Kakapotahi Area, on or around 18 December 1998.

Pathology reports have revealed that David suffered a large fracture to the skull. There have been reports that the 25-year-old was seriously assaulted by two trainee chefs in the days leading up to his death, possibly at a party in the Nelson Quay area of Greymouth. Were you at this party or do you have any information that could help police? The investigating team need to hear from you.

Some years after the original investigation a letter was sent to the Police Commissioner with details about David’s murder. The letter named a person of interest, a location of interest and a vehicle of interest.  Police are appealing for the author of a letter to come forward.
