At approximately 8pm Monday, 15 November 2021, Atonio backed his car into a ditch near Laingholm Beach. As the vehicle needed a tow he slept rough and was seen at Laingholm beach before catching a bus to New Lynn the next day. Atonio was last seen around 3:30pm at New Lynn Station exiting a bus and in the Station Mart store. He was wearing a patterned flat cap, sunglasses, grey short sleeved polo with a white line on the cuff, a black vest and dark pants.
