Police are stepping up their hunt for two dangerous prisoners who escaped from the Upper Hutt Police Station nearly two weeks ago.
Barry Dwayne Kahui, 23, and Andrew Richard Waara, 22, escaped on 19 May after being transferred from Rimutaka Prison to await court appearances. Both prisoners are believed to be still in the wider Wellington District.
"We’re actively looking for these men and encourage people who have seen them or know where they are to contact their nearest police station," says Detective Steve Dearns, Upper Hutt CIB.
"Our inquiries have included visits to Mongrel Mob addresses which the men are known to frequent in Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt and Porirua."
Detective Dearns says that information, including sightings from the public, is being followed up and police believe both men are hiding in the greater Wellington District.
Waara faces charges of dishonesty offences, attempting to pervert the course of justice and possession of a class c drug. Kahui faces charges of aggravated robbery, assault with intent to rob, burglary, breach of bail, breach of parole and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.
Both have warrants to arrest relating to the escape.
Kahui is approximately 194cm (6ft 5in) tall, a Maori of solid build and has closely cropped black hair. Waara is approximately 182 cm (6ft) tall of medium build.
"We’re determined to find them, despite some reluctance from some people to assist the police inquiries."
