Cameras at intersections to reduce crashes

1 min read

North Shore Police have been covertly filming intersections, in an effort to reduce crashes and identify motorists who fail to obey the road rules.

North Shore traffic head, Senior Sergeant Steve Morgan says, "Using a covert video camera, staff concentrated on the top ten crash black spot intersections. Some vehicle owners written to viewed the footage and realised that their actions could have caused an accident," says Senior Sergeant Morgan.

During a three week period the intersection campaign identified a total of 172 offences for which tickets are being issued. Offences include failing to comply with red and amber traffic signals, failing to drive in correct lanes and failing to stop at stop signs.

The enforcement campaign will continue and police will be working with the LTSA and the North Shore City Council to look at other ways to reduce crashes at forty intersections on the North Shore. The intersections were identified as having crashes involving significant injury between 1998 and 2002.

During that time 51 people were either killed or seriously injured and there were 356 minor injuries at the intersections. Senior Sergeant Morgan says, "A number of intersections are crash black spots such as Wairau Road with Target and Archers roads, but the public need to remember that they should always be alert at intersections."
