Police cap returned

1 min read

The New Zealand Police forage cap advertised for sale on the website eBay has been returned.

"The person who was selling the cap contacted us after learning of our concerns about its sale through the media," says National Operations Manager, Superintendent Tony McLeod.

"The person is a genuine collector of military and other memorabilia and came into possession of the cap several years ago in circumstances that appeared to him to be legitimate.

"We appreciate the man’s cooperation, and Police will not be taking any action against him."

As soon as eBay became aware of the problem, the item was removed from the website.

Mr McLeod says items of police uniform and equipment remain the property of New Zealand Police and must be returned when staff leave the organisation.

"The public should also be aware that it’s an offence under the section 51 of the Police Act 1958 to use items of uniform or equipment to impersonate a police officer," he says.
