Wellington inner city bypass protests

1 min read

Wellington Police say a cameraman and a community newspaper journalist were arrested and subsequently warned and released without further action following an inner city bypass protest early this afternoon.

Inspector Marty Grenfell, Wellington Area Commander, says people have a lawful right to protest as long as they do so without impeding the rights of others. "Police also recognise media have a role in reporting protests however care needs to be taken to ensure the police operation is not compromised.

"The safety and rights of everyone, whether they be media, members of the public or police, are primary considerations in protest activity."

He said police will continue dialogue with all parties involved in protests, including media, to ensure expectations are clearly understood.
