1 min read

A driver involved in a crash in Palmerston North early Saturday morning (12 September) has died in hospital.

The crash happened shortly before 5am on Saturday when a Subaru Impreza crashed through bridge railings into the Mangaone Stream.

The driver, 21-year-old Geoffrey Payne, from Palmerston North was taken to hospital with serious injuries and sadly died yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, 16 September).

Two men aged 19 and 20 who were passengers in the car, and also from Palmerston North, suffered minor injuries.

Police investigating the cause of the crash are keen to identify two Good Samaritans who helped out at the scene of the crash.

The two men waded into the stream to help Mr Payne and his injured friends but left before police were able to obtain their details or find out what they may have witnessed. It is believed that the men may have just finished a work shift at nearby Longburn. Enquiries are underway but in the meantime they are asked to contact Sergeant Tony Romley at Palmerston North Police on 06 351 3600.

Media enquiries should be referred to Communications Manager Kim Perks on 06 351 2546 or 027 234 8256.
