Police warn one-day cricket spectators to behave

1 min read

Wellington Police will take a zero tolerance approach to missile throwing and other boorish behaviour at Wednesday's one day cricket international at the Westpac Stadium.

Senior Sergeant Jason Ross, Wellington Police Risk Manager, says officers are working closely with Westpac Stadium, Wellington and New Zealand cricket officials to ensure the match is played without interruptions from the crowd.

"If you're going to the game purely to have a day in the sun, drink lots of alcohol and make a spectacle of yourself, then think again," Senior Sergeant Ross says.

"We're not going to be tolerating intoxication or the throwing of missiles in any form at players or other spectators," he says. "The small minority of spectators who want to get liquored up and make life miserable for those around them can expect to be ejected from the ground, or find themselves in our custody.

"It's a midweek game so that might stop some of the more loutish behaviour encountered at Eden Park on Saturday," Senior Sergeant Ross says. "We've taken into account what happened in Auckland on Saturday but it hasn't influenced our planning.

"We'll have staff at the ground throughout the day and want people to enjoy themselves without causing problems for those around them."
