The body of a woman found in a stream at the bottom of a slope in a Hamilton park on Sunday morning is still yet to be identified.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton of the Hamilton CIB said it was unusual no reports had been received by Police of a woman matching the deceased's description after three days.

"She was found by passers-by in knee deep water in the Waitawhiriwhiri Stream at the bottom of a steep slope in Edgecumbe Park about 11.35am.

"Skid marks at the scene indicate she failed to negotiate a bend in the path she was riding down, struck a tree and flown over her bike's handle bars finishing up in the stream, she was not wearing a cycle helmet."

Mr Thornton said when found the woman was wearing a black T-shirt and blue knee length shorts with a light green Tiki necklace around her neck. Her death is not being treated as suspicious.

"The key thing to remember is we're dealing with a dead person, someone who must have friends and family wondering where she is and if that is the case we urge them to make contact with us.

"The woman appears Maori or Polynesian, is believed to be aged in her thirties and has distinctive frizzy short to medium length hair, is of medium build and is about 176cm tall. Efforts to identify her using forensic methods have so far drawn a blank.

Mr Thornton urged anyone who knows someone matching this description to contact Police.

"Someone out there must know who she is, someone must be missing her- help us in identifying this woman and return her to her family," he said.

Mr Thornton can be contacted at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200. Alternatively information can be left anonymously on the Crimestoppers crimeline, 0800 555111.
