Body found in car submerged in canal in Hauraki District

Eastern Waikato Police are currently working to formally identify a body found trapped inside a car submerged in the Awaiti Canal in the Hauraki District this morning.

Waikato Road Policing Manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, said the submerged car was found in the canal about 9.30am.

"The Serious Crash Unit was diverted from an investigation in Te Kauwhata to attend this latest scene and enquiries were working on establishing how the car came to have left the road.

"There was a sense of urgency in relation to recovering the vehicle from the canal before the tide turned least it be swept away and the car was recovered shortly before 12.pm."

The body of a male was recovered from the vehicle and an identification process is currently underway.

With that process yet to be completed it is not expected the identity of the deceased will be released today.
