Youth Appears in Court After Head-On Crash

A 16 year old male is to appear in the North Shore Youth Court today on a charge of unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, after a two car head-on crash on State Highway One near the Dome Valley yesterday.

Two males aged 17 and 34 years died in the crash, and two other persons, a 14 x year old male and a 39 year old female, are in Starship and Auckland hospitals with serious injuries.

Police have released the names of the two deceased. They are:

NOBLE / Hemi / Paul / Pomana / Marcus

Male, Maori

DOB - 06/04/1989 - aged 17 years.

Resident of Kaitaia. - He is a single man

Mr NOBLE was a front seat passenger in the Mercedes C200 sedan.

The second deceased is:

MURPHY/ Frederick / Te Aparua

Male, Maori

DOB - 28/01/1972 - aged 34 years.

Resident of Keri Keri - He is a single man

Mr MURPHY was seated in the back of the Mercedes. He was directly behind the other deceased passenger [NOBLE]

A third passenger in the vehicle was a 14 year old Kaitaia teenager.

YATES/Hone is in Auckland Starship Hospital with abdominal injuries. YATES was seated directly behind the driver in the silver Mercedes. His condition is described by the hospital as stable.

The 39 year old female driver and sole occupant of the other vehicle involved, a RAV Four, has had surgery overnight in Auckland Hospital. She has serious leg injuries and her condition is also described as stable.

The Serious Crash Unit is continuing its investigations into the cause of the crash, and the Rodney CIB will carry out further enquiries into all sightings of the Mercedes from the time it was allegedly stolen to the time of the crash. Other, more serious charges are also likely to be laid.
