Rough start to Hamilton nightshift leads to woman's arrest

2 min read

It was supposed to be a reconciliation meeting instead it ended up with a man having a wine glass smashed into his face, a car mounting a footpath just missing a police station and a woman in custody overnight.

Hamilton Senior Sergeant Gill Meadows said usually night-shift officers like to glide into their role, not attending call-outs until at least the start of their shift.

"But shortly before 10pm there was a bit of a commotion with a BMW mounting the footpath outside the Central Police Station, coming to a halt just centimetres from bollards outside the front doors.

"It turns out an estranged couple who had enjoyed a short, volatile relationship, had held a reconciliation meeting in the car near the Hamilton Lake but things had not gone so well."

Ms Meadows said it appears the man had started the car to drive the woman back to where she needed to go while she was holding two wine glasses.

"She has then smashed one of the glasses into the man's face as he is driving causing several cuts and he has tried to put her in some sought of lock all while the vehicle is moving.

"The man has then driven the car at speed to the Police Station where he has mounted the footpath and come to a screeching halt and begun blasting on his horn."

Ms Meadows said hearing the disturbance officers rushed outside to investigate not knowing quite what to expect.

"What we encountered certainly wasn't one of the scenarios we'd been thinking of, the woman who was aged in her fifties was charged with assault with a weapon and is likely to be bailed today.

"If you were watching a B-grade sitcom this would no doubt have appeared quite humorous however domestic violence is not funny and the situation could have ended far worse than it did."

Police advise anyone involved in a violent relationship or who fears for the safety of themselves or their children to seek help before their situation deteriorates to the extent of last night's incident.
