1 min read

Superintendent Sam Hoyle, currently Acting National Manager Youth Services at Police National Headquarters has been appointed as the new District Commander for the Eastern Police District.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Resource Management), Lyn Provost, said that Superintendent Hoyle would bring 21 years experience to bear in his new role.

For the last six years Mr Hoyle has held the position of Wanganui Area Commander. During that time he has played a substantial part in lifting that Area's performance into one of the best performing in the country.

Superintendent Hoyle will take over his new duties from the current Acting District Commander, Waata Shepherd on 12 February. The district commander vacancy arose out of the promotion of the previous position holder, Grant Nicholls, to the position of Assistant Commissioner.

Deputy Commissioner Provost said she wished to publicly record her thanks to Inspector Shepherd for his service in the Acting District Commander role in recent months.

"There was a seamless transition from Grant Nicholls to Waata and Superintendent Hoyle will assume command of a district in good heart. I am sure all the communities in the Eastern District can look forward to proactive policing under Sam's leadership," said Mrs Provost.

Significant appointments during Sam Hoyle's career have included:

Feb 2006 - present: Acting National Manager Youth Services.

Nov 2000 - present: Area Commander Wanganui, AOS Commander Wanganui

Jan 2000 - Nov 2000 O/C CIB Wanganui

Mar 1995 - Jan 2000 O/C CIB North Otago

Mr Hoyle graduated from Police College in 1985 and initially served as a general duties branch constable in Whangarei. He qualified as a Detective in 1990 and was appointed as a Sergeant (sectional duties) in Kaitaia in 1993.
