Take responsibility this weekend

1 min read

Don't be fooled by the sunny weather. The long weekend is expected to bring an onslaught of rain and that means being extra careful if taking to the roads.

Although Central District currently has its lowest road death toll in more than 20 years, two people have already lost their lives this month and Police hope that the long Queen's Birthday weekend doesn't claim any more.

A reduced speed tolerance will be enforced, meaning anyone caught driving more than 4km/h over the speed limit can expect a fine and demerits. A decision has now been made nationally to enforce this lower tolerance during every holiday period.

Road Policing Manager for Central District, Inspector Neil Wynne said: "We will have extra staff out on the roads but when it comes to the crunch we are very much reliant on drivers being sensible and responsible and planning their journeys."

Motorists are being urged to make sure their vehicles are roadworthy, drive to the conditions, allow extra time for journeys, share the driving and take plenty of breaks.
