Marton Police are asking for help from people who may have seen a jogger running on Wellington Road, Marton, shortly before a fatal car crash in the town about 6.45am today.

Sergeant Peter Wood said officers investigating the crash in which a 52-year-old local man died, are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area about the time of the crash.

It was dark at the time, and the crash happened on a straight piece of road between Reads Road and Whales Lines. The car was heading north on Wellington Road and ended up against a power pole.

The driver of the car was the sole occupant and he died of injuries sustained at the scene. The man’s name will not be released until next of kin are informed.

The section of roadway was closed but reopened about 10.30am.

People who were in the Wellington Road area about the time of the crash and who may have seen a jogger running on the side of the road are asked to contact Senior Constable Phil Randal, Marton Police. The telephone number is 06 327 6555.
