Tragic end to family outing

1 min read

What should have been a night of celebration after the Rugby World Cup final turned to tragedy at about 2.20am yesterday [October 24] when 17 year-old pedestrian Sanele Pauli was fatally knocked down while crossing Great North Rd with two family members.

The three men had just got off a west-bound bus and were crossing the road near the intersection of Premier Ave and Great North Rd when Sanele was struck by a silver Nissan Primera, which was travelling east towards the city.

The Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating and has spoken with the driver of the car but Constable Mark Rodgers says he'd like to hear from other possible witnesses to the crash and the immediate lead-up to it.

"We'd also like to speak to anyone who was on the bus - including the driver - who may have seen the tragedy unfold."

Anyone with information can contact Constable Rodgers on 09 359 3116 or e-mail mark.rodgers@police.govt.nz
