Police are disappointed that too many people are continuing to leave valuable or desirable items in full view in parked vehicles.
Yesterday morning Police visited nine car parks in Auckland's CBD as part of Operation Secure and noticed several vehicles had GPS navigation devices, iPods, phones and handbags on display in their parked cars.
"It's clear that the message about preventing vehicle crime is not getting through to some," Senior Sergeant Vaughn Graham says.
"By leaving such items on display in vehicles, motorists invite unwanted attention from opportunist thieves who, within seconds, can ruin a person's day by stealing the items and damaging the vehicles."
2,500 flyers were distributed to customers and left on parked vehicles reminding drivers to be wary of the need to lock cars, remove property or hide it from prospective thieves.
"While there were many vehicles observed where owners had taken measures to prevent offending, there were also plenty of stark reminders that the message about car security remains 'work in progress'.
"A set of keys was even left in the ignition of one vehicle!"
Police will continue to work with carpark owners, Council and the general public to try and reduce opportunities for thieves.
People are reminded to call 111 if they observe a break-in occurring.

Report all incidents of car theft to Police. Do not leave valuables in view in your vehicle.
