Man stabbed outside Wellington District Court

1 min read

A 31-year-old Wellington man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon following a confrontation between two people at Wellington District Court today.

The charged man is a member of Black Power, who police say attacked a Mongrel Mob member outside the court rooms on the second floor of Wellington District Court this afternoon.

Both men were appearing in court today on unrelated matters.

Acting Wellington Area Commander Inspector Greg Gilpin says police were called because of concern about the two opposing gang groups. As police arrived, the Black Power member approached the Mongrel Mob member as he left the court room and stabbed him in the back of the neck with a knife.

Police subdued and arrested the offender who is in custody.

The stabbed man received a cut to the back of his neck and was seen by ambulance staff at the court, but did not want to stay and left the court.

Police will be speaking further with the stabbed man.

"We are concerned that the offender had a knife in court. In light of tension between these two gangs, Police will be working further with courts to ensure safety and security in the courts," says Inspector Gilpin.

The offender will appear in Wellington District Court tomorrow.
