A 61-year-old male cyclist died at the scene of a crash on Fergusson Drive, near St Patrick's College, Silverstream, about 8.40am today.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCarthy, Upper Hutt Police, says the cyclist was riding in a southbound lane when the fatality happened.

"At this early stage of our investigation we believe that a driver of a parked vehicle has opened his door, resulting in the cyclist crashing into the door and falling into the path of a truck that was travelling in the same direction."

The cyclist, who lived in the Upper Hutt area, died at the scene. His name will be released when immediate family have been notified.

Police have spoken to several witnesses and would like to speak to anyone else who was in the area at the time and witnessed the incident.

Witnesses can contact the Upper Hutt Police Station on (04) 527 2300 and speak confidentially to Senior Sergeant Jason McCarthy.
