Police are urging motorists to consider the five main contributors to road crashes; speed, booze, belts, dangerous/ careless driving and at risk drivers as the investigate a fatal crash near Bennydale overnight.

Waikato Road Policing Manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, said initial indications were that speed, alcohol and not wearing a seatbelt were all factors in the crash which happened on SH30 north of Bennydale about 8.30pm.

The driver of the southbound Mitsubishi car, 21-year-old Lloyd Nikora PHILLIPS, of Bennydale was killed from injuries sustained when he was thrown from his car as it rolled several times across a paddock.

"It appears Mr PHILLIPS has lost control of his car on a moderate bend and it has left the road and crashed through a fence before rolling several times," said Mr Tooman.

"Indications are that three of the five basic principles of safe driving were ignored with speed, alcohol and use of seatbelts apparent factors in the crash. It's the simple things that are killing people on our roads and it's something everyone has to take responsibility for."

Members of the Waikato Serious Crash Unit will return to the scene of the crash on Friday morning to carry out further forensic examinations.

"Drivers can expect minor delays and traffic management will be in place as the investigators map out the scene," said Mr Tooman.

The death of Mr PHILLIPS brings the Waikato Police District's road toll to four so far this year.
