Waikato Police searching for an escaped prisoner who fled a prison work party in the North Waikato are currently following up leads in the Counties Manukau District.

Thanking members of the public for their assistance, Detective Sergeant Michele Moore of the Huntly CIB said Police had received a number of possible sighting reports for Storm Bryce HUGHES.

"We received positive information on his movements near Bombay earlier this morning and are following up reports of him being at a Pukekohe address about 8.30am.

"At this point we can't stress enough the importance of not approaching HUGHES who has an extensive history of violence. If you see this man to call 111 immediately."

HUGHES is described as a male Caucasian, of medium build, 171cm tall with short blond hair and various tattoos on his arms and back.

When last seen HUGHES was dressed in a blue denim jacket and a prison uniform of grey shirt and trousers.

HUGHES was a member of a prison work party working outside the wire when he fled the Springhill Correctional Facility about 9.15am yesterday.

Having previously lived in Australia HUGHES is also known to have connections in the Tokoroa, Turangi and Taumarunui areas.
