Police in Levin are investigating a fatal road crash that has claimed the lives of three people.

The crash happened last night (Tuesday, 17 February) with police called around 10.55pm.

A Nissan sedan car travelling south from Foxton collided with a truck and trailer travelling north killing the two adults and child in the car.

Identification is still to be confirmed, but the deceased are believed to be a 28-year-old woman, her 44-year-old partner and their seven-year-old son, a family from Levin. The 43-year-old driver of the truck from Rotorua was not hurt but suffered shock.

The road was closed for some time to allow for an investigation by the Serious Crash Investigation Unit. The cause of the crash is still to be established.

Police have been told that directly after the crash a small black hatchback car stopped at the crash scene and then did a U-turn and left. The people in this car may be vital witnesses to the investigation and are asked to contact police.
