Assault victim dies

Tarun Asthana, the 25 year-old Mt Albert man who was knocked to the ground outside a fast food outlet near Britomart shortly after 5am on Saturday morning, died in Auckland Hospital at about 11.30 this morning.

He was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death and had been on a life support system since he was allegedly assaulted by a 27 year-old man.

The accused is due to appear in the Auckland District Court today charged with Mr Asthana's assault and, due to his death, will face a more serious charge at a later date.
