Hokitika boat incident – UPDATE

1 min read

Police can confirm the name of the man who died when his boat capsized off the coast of Hokitika on Saturday afternoon.

Kerry John Apperley, who was 48, died after taking his boat out to test it in the water.

Unfortunately, the boat tipped over in rough conditions, with waves reaching heights of between 3-and-a-half and 4 metres.

Mr Apperley and his son, who were both wearing life jackets and wetsuits, then attempted to swim to shore – about 100 metres.

Sadly, Mr Apperley did not survive.

Our thoughts are with his family following this distressing event.

Police are unable to provide further comment as the matter has been referred to the coroner.
