Police are continuing to investigate a knife attack on a 22-year old man in Barrington overnight.

The man received a serious injury after being attacked at about 10.40pm last night [Wednesday 19 February]. He underwent surgery at Christchurch Hospital this morning and is currently described as being in a stable condition.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darryl Sweeney says a scene examination was completed this morning at the Somerset Crescent location where the stabbing occurred.

"We are now focusing on identifying and locating those responsible for this attack, and establishing the relationship between the parties involved.

"Investigators are already speaking with several persons of interest, and these inquiries will continue over the coming days."

Detective Senior Sergeant Sweeney says initial inquiries have established that the incident started at an address in Selwyn Street and ended after a short chase at Somerset Street where the stabbing occurred.

"We are seeking information from anyone who was in the area of Selwyn Street and Somerset Street, Barrington at about 10.40pm last night who saw the incident or noticed any unusual or suspicious activity."

The victim remains in hospital and is expected to be formally interviewed tomorrow. A team of 12 investigators is working on the case.
