Manawatu Police launch homicide inquiry

A homicide inquiry has been launched after the death of a man in Palmerston North this morning.

Officers were called to a central city address at about 10pm yesterday (6 April, 2015) where an altercation had occurred between two men.

As a result of the altercation, a 28-year-old man sustained injuries to his upper body and was transported to the Palmerston North Hospital where he died this morning.

A 26-year-old Palmerston North man was arrested at the scene and has been charged with murder.  He will appear in the Palmerston North District Court today.

A scene examination is underway at the property and officers are speaking to witnesses and completing an area canvass.

Police is not looking for anyone else in relation to the death.

A post mortem is scheduled for this afternoon.

The man's name will be released once formal identification is complete and next of kin has been advised.
