The Armed Offenders Squad was called to a house in Pah St, Motueka, about 4am today after it was reported a man had been shot.
Police cordoned the area and entered the house where the man was found with a gunshot wound to his stomach.
The man in his 20s has been taken to Nelson Hospital in a serious condition.
Police believe he was shot with a .22 rifle. A rifle has been recovered.
Two other people at the address are being interviewed.
A scene guard is in place and an investigation is under way to establish what has happened.
