Police officers assaulted in Invercargill

A police officer required hospital treatment in Invercargill after being assaulted early this morning.

Two male officers were on patrol in the city around 2:30am today when they were assaulted by a 20-year-old man at the intersection of Dee and Don Streets.

One of the officers was knocked unconscious and taken to hospital. He was released a few hours later and is resting at home.

The second officer did not suffer any injuries.

The offender was arrested a short distance away from the scene. He was charged with aggravated wounding and aggravated assault, and is due in Invercargill District Court tomorrow.

Police want to thank members of the public who assisted at the scene.
