District Crime Drops By 13.3%
Recorded offences in the Waitemata district dropped 13.3% in the year ending 30 June.
The figures were revealed today as part of the annual crime statistics nationwide release, which show a 7.4% decrease in recorded offences for the same time period.
In the Waitemata district the figures show there were 4705 less potential victims of crime, with 30 629 recorded offences, compared to last year's 35 334.
Burglary is down 23.7% across the district, with 1260 less burglaries than the previous year.
In the Waitakere area burglary fell by 28.9%, with 895 less recorded burglaries than the previous year. In the same area, theft and related offences were down 18.7% - last year 6484 thefts were recorded, this year there were 5273.
"What these numbers actually mean is that there are literally less victims, and that's our core business. We're really focussed on crime prevention and I think that's something that has been proven by our burglary and theft figures, especially in the Waitakere area, which previously had a high instance of that type of offending" says Acting District Commander Inspector Steve Kehoe, Waitemata District.
"Our staff don't just come to work every day to chase bad people, we aim to stop the crime before it even happens and the team are very proud to see their hard work is obviously paying off" says Mr Kehoe.
