People of Police - Richard - Inspector, Service Delivery

Inspired by the Humans of New York photoblog, we’re showcasing some of the incredible stories and experience of people throughout our organisation – both sworn and non-constabulary staff.

Richard - Inspector, Service Delivery

Kia ora koutou, I’ve been with New Zealand Police for 11 years, I’m from Canterbury and have spent most of my career based in Canterbury. In 2017, I made the move to windy Welly and I’m now based in Police National Headquarters.

I have been fortunate enough to work in a range of different roles during my career, including on the frontline in Public Safety Teams, Road Policing, Investigations, Youth, Prosecutions and National Operations. I have also been a member of the Christchurch Armed Offenders Squad and now work in Service Delivery, leading the Firearms Amnesty and Buyback Programme for Police.

I’ve been involved in responding to a range of major events over recent years including the Canterbury earthquakes, Port Hills fire, Nelson fires, the national response to the March 15 terror attack, White Island eruption and the all of government COVID response.

My involvement has been in a variety of roles, from on the front line responding, through to being the Police representative in the National Management Crisis Centre working in the Beehive.

I’ve enjoyed and have been well supported by Police to carry out a range of studies including a Certificate in Business Management, Bachelor of Social Services and I am finishing my Masters in Professional Practice in Public Administration.

I have found my studies have assisted me with developing and navigating my way through all the amazing opportunities that exist in Police to make a difference in our communities, which like so many of my colleagues and now friends, I set out to achieve when I joined.

I really look forward to continuing to make a difference and I am very keen to help others receive the same opportunities and support that I have enjoyed.

I am so grateful to have had many experiences during my time in Police. I am very proud to be a member of the blue family, and of the support, comradeship and sense of belonging that comes with being a member of New Zealand Police.

One of the most exciting things about the future for me is we have the chance to shape it. I don’t know what role I may be in and where or who I may be working with, but I do know I will be supported to make a difference for people and I will be part of an amazing organisation and team of people who are heading in the right direction.
