The 2002 Annual Report places significance on the events of September 11 and the effect this had on policing in New Zealand. Other significant events included the postponed visit by HRH Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh in the New Year.

The 2001/02 year also saw public trust and confidence in Police rise to an all-time high. Staff numbers also rose to a record high, but recruitment around the wider Auckland area is needed to attract more sworn staff members.

The Annual Report 2002 also includes the achievements of key result areas, the Police statement of objectives and service performance, information on reducing inequalities, reports from service centers and other groups, as well as financial and organizational information.

The 2000/01 year has been relatively quiet in terms of major operations and this has enabled Police to focus on core activities. The year saw the introduction or improvement of a range of management processes that was greatly enabled by the appointment of two new deputy commissioners and other senior executive appointments.

The highlights of the 2000/01 year have been the continued reduction in recorded crime, improved crime resolution rates and lower road toll. The largest injection of new resource during the year resulted from the introduction of the highway patrol.

This annual report looks at the key milestones for the New Zealand Police over the period 1 July 1999 to 30 June 2000. The report makes reference to the larger events police assisted with around the country including APEC security, three state visits by foreign Presidents, the new Millennium with the Y2K situation, and the America’s Cup campaign.

These larger events were in additional to numerous reviews and operational requirements including the Review into Management Systems and Structures and an examination of Police IT systems due to the INCIS contract.
