Notes:

  • On scanning documents:

    • If you do scan a document, please adjust your scan settings to a lower quality setting. The main scanner/printer settings to adjust are:
      • scan in ‘black and white’ (as opposed to ‘colour’)
      • lower the resolution (dpi) to approx. 300 (as opposed to ~600+/high quality)
      • if available, select the option to compress the output/PDF file
      • scan the document to create a .PDF file. Do not output to an image file such as .JPEG, .TIFF, .PNG

Application for a firearms licence

This application form is for all applicants for a New Zealand Firearms Licence (except visitors to New Zealand) whether you have previously held a firearms licence or not.

This licence is considered the standard licence and is the minimum requirement to legally possess any arms items.

Application for a dealer’s licence

Applicants must concurrently hold a firearms licence.

Applies to any firearms activity by way of business e.g. shops; on-line merchants; gunsmiths; second hand dealers; game parks.

Includes manufacture for sale of any firearm, prohibited magazine, prohibited part, airgun, pistol, or restricted weapon.

Also use this form when applying for an endorsement to possess pistols, restricted weapons, or prohibited firearms and magazines as a licenced dealer.

Dealers’ licences must be renewed annually for a dealer to continue to carry on any firearms activity by way of business.

Application by a licensed dealer for approval to manufacture certain classes of arms items
(Dealer’s licence holder)

Application by a licenced dealer for permission to manufacture certain classes of arms items.

From 24 June 2021 any person wishing to manufacture items in certain classes of arms items must hold a current dealer’s licence and have obtained the Commissioner’s approval (s6B). The classes of arms items are:

  • pistols
  • restricted weapons
  • pistol carbine conversion kits
  • air pistol carbine conversion kits.

Complete the application form and then submit your application online or by delivering it to your local police station.
