Maori adzes stolen from museum

1 min read

Rare greenstone Maori adzes have been stolen from locked cases at the Okains Bay Museum, on Banks Peninsula, overnight.

Akaroa Constable Alistair Davidson, says the thieves seem to have been selective in what has been taken. Three greenstone adzes and other blocks of partially worked nephrite have been taken. They are reported to be priceless artefacts but conservatively estimated to be valued at half a million dollars.

Inquiries are being made and anyone with information or who was in that area of Banks Peninsula yesterday/ last night who noticed vehicles/ people behaving suspiciously or just seemed out of place, is asked to contact Police.
