Historian among graduating police officers

The 63 new police officers graduating from The Royal New Zealand Police College today bring a wide range of life experience to the job.

Among the many different previous careers one recruit has a PhD in history and was previously a specialist historian for the Crown Law Office and lectured in international relations at Massey University. He is being posted to Porirua.

Wing 223 will graduate from The Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua at 2:00pm on Thursday 26 May.

*63 recruits will graduate – 40 male and 23 female

*The average age of wing members is 29 (the youngest is 22 and the oldest is 40)

Wing 223 prize winners:

Minister’s Prize for First in Wing was awarded to Constable Glenn OLLIVER posted to New Plymouth. Constable OLLIVER was also awarded the International Police Association Academic Prize (overall winner for academic exams).

Commissioner’s Prize for Second in Wing was awarded to Constable Jennie NICHOLAS posted to Wellington.

Patron’s Prize for Third in Wing was awarded to Constable Bart GRAHAM posted to Kaikohe.

Ericsson Practical Prize (overall winner for practical assessments, file preparation and fingerprinting) was awarded to Constable Michael HENWOOD posted to Hamilton.

The HOLDEN Tactical Skills and Safety Prize (overall winner in defensive tactics, firearms and driving) was awarded to Constable Jamie LAMPERD posted to Manurewa.

The Physical Training and Defensive Tactics Award was awarded to Constable Geoffrey WHITE, posted to Blenheim.

The Driver Training Award was awarded to Constable Dara TAYLOR, posted to Wellington.

Police Association prizes for section achievement:

This prize is awarded to an individual from each section who, in the collective view of the members of the section and the wing instructors, made the greatest contribution to the overall success of the team.

Section One, Constable Stephen BROWN, posted to Glen Innes.

Section Two, Constable Sean MUIR, posted to Manurewa.

Section Three, Constable Leanne THOMSON, posted to Wellington.

Wing Patron: Rosemary Barrington

Rosemary Barrington has recently stepped down as Chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington, but continues to be on the University Council. She has a BA (Hons) in sociology from Victoria University and an MSc in social and economic planning from the University of London.

In the early 1980s she was a research fellow at Victoria University’s Institute of Criminology, where she conducted research for the Department of Justice on rape and sexual assault complaints and went on to assist Police training on rape complaints and in behavioural science.

From the late 1980s she sat on the Indecent Publications Tribunal for six years, was Director of the Government Parliamentary Research Unit (1986-89), Group Manager Community Services at Hutt City Council (1989-92), General Manager Culture and Recreation at Wellington City Council (1992-96), and Chief Executive of the Horowhenua District Council (1996-2000).
