1 min read

The man injured in an attack at Cora Lynn near Arthurs Pass last night has been discharged from hospital.

A 36 year old man has been charged with dangerous driving and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. A court ordered psychiatric assessment has been granted with a two week remand.

Canterbury Police, Southern area, are currently investigating the incident which occurred last night, Wednesday 30 November, near the Bealey Spur.

At about 6.15pm an elderly man suffered injuries which appear to be consistent with an axe attack, that appears to have been unprovoked, says Detective Sergeant Corrie Parnell, who is in charge of the investigation.

About the time of the incident an off duty Canterbury police officer was travelling to the West Coast when he came across a road work gang administering first aid to the injured man.

He followed a vehicle believed to be involved in an unmarked car and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle was stopped in West Melton with road spikes by staff from Selwyn, STU and Highway Patrol. AOS had been deployed but were not present.
