Crash investigators working to establish the cause of a crash that left a 10-year-old boy fighting for his life outside Paeroa yesterday have identified that earlier reports on how the crash occurred were wrong.

The 10-year-old boy (earlier incorrectly described as 11) is currently in a serious condition in Auckland's Starship Hospital after being taken being flown to Waikato Hospital following the crash that happened on Rotokohu Rd about 11am.

An initial investigation carried out by the Waikato Serious Crash Unit revealed the boy was travelling south along Rotokohu Rd on a 100cc quad-bike intending to turn into the driveway of his family's property when he turned into the path of an oncoming four-wheel-drive vehicle and suffered critical injuries.

The crash took place on a stretch of open road subject to a 100km/h speed limit.
