Male believed to have been targeting elderly

1 min read

Papanui Police are currently investigating a male who is believed to have been targeting elderly persons who reside in the St Albans, Riccarton, Edgeware and Linwood areas, between June 2009 and March 2010. Police believe he befriends elderly persons and is known to approach them at church or at retirement villages. He enters their homes and dishonestly claims personal hardship to gain sympathy and deceive the residents into giving him cash and cheques.

This male is currently in custody and is assisting Police with their enquiries.

"We believe that there are a number of incidents which this man has recently been involved in which have not been reported and we'd love to hear about them," says Constable Amanda Dalzell.

"If you know of a member of your family or a neighbour or friend who has been visited by this male, please encourage them to contact me," she says.

This male is described as a Caucasian, age 41, of solid build about 170cm (5' 7") tall with dark, longish unkempt hair.

"Elderly people are often very trusting and kind and will listen to a story of hardship," says Amanda Dalzell. "Please do not give away money or let strangers into your house. Discuss any giving with your family or a friend first."

If you or anyone known to you has any knowledge of this male or have been involved in circumstances of this nature please contact Constable Amanda Dalzell at the Papanui Police on phone number 374 1757.
