Man killed in gorge crash is named

The truck driver who was killed in a crash in the Manawatu Gorge early this morning has been named as John Douglas Watene, aged 49 who lived in Feilding.

Recovery of the truck and trailer is still ongoing. The gorge was partially opened during the morning while Police waited for specialist heavy lifting equipment to arrive. That has now arrived on scene and the road has been closed again to enable the recovery of the truck and Mr Watene's body.

It is possible that recovery of the trailer of the truck which is in the water will have to take place tomorrow.
