Waikato Police crash investigators are currently at the scene of a collision between a car and a truck that claimed the life of a driver near Waharoa early this afternoon.

Matamata-Piako Sub-Area Manager, Senior Sergeant Dana McDonald, said the crash happened on SH27 near the intersection with Wardville Rd about 2.28pm.

"With Serious Crash Unit investigators currently mapping out the scene it's still too early to speculate on the cause of the crash which involved a silver Honda Saber saloon and a white and blue Hino truck.

"The male driver of the car died of his injuries at the scene while the driver of the truck is currently being interviewed by our staff, details of the deceased and what caused the crash are expected to be available tomorrow."

SH27 is expected to remain closed for some time with signposted diversions in place at Waharoa and Walton respectively.
