Ninety-five new constables on the beat

The first large intake of new police constables this year graduates from The Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua tomorrow.

The graduation will take place on Thursday 25 May at 2:00pm.

Several graduation prizes were scooped up by 24-year-old Constable Mark Hamilton, a former bar manager and postie who will work in Auckland City. He was awarded first in the wing and other academic and skills-based prizes.

During their time at Police College the wing has enjoyed considerable support from their patron, Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force Lieutenant-General Jerry Mateparae. This has included joining him at the Porirua RSA Anzac Day Service where he led them on parade.

95 recruits will graduate - 71 male and 24 female

The average age of wing members is 27 (the youngest is 18 and the oldest is 42)

* Minister’s Prize for First in Wing was awarded to Constable Mark HAMILTON posted to Auckland.

Constable HAMILTON was also awarded the:

- International Police Association Academic Prize (overall winner for academic exams)

- Ericsson Practical Prize (overall winner for practical assessments, file preparation and fingerprinting)

- Meltzer Prize for Weapon Training

* Commissioner’s Prize for Second in Wing was awarded to Constable Ashley CLEMENTS posted to Auckland.

Constable CLEMENTS was also awarded a section prize (see below).

* Patron’s Prize for Third in Wing was awarded to Constable Felicity KING posted to Christchurch.

* The HOLDEN Tactical Skills and Safety Prize (overall winner in defensive tactics, firearms and driving) was awarded to Constable Paul AGNEW posted to Wellington.

* The Physical Training and Defensive Tactics Award was awarded to Constable Miriam REDDINGTON posted to Wellington.

Constable REDDINGTON was also awarded a section prize (see below).

* The Driver Training Award was awarded to Constable Stephen HUNT, posted to Auckland.

Police Association prizes for section achievement:

This prize is awarded to an individual from each section who, in the collective view of the members of the section and the wing instructors, made the greatest contribution to the overall success of the team.

Lieutenant-General Jerry Mateparae is Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force, a position he was appointed to on 1 May. He was formerly Chief of the New Zealand Army.
