Upper Hutt Police say they're making good progress in their investigation into the death of local man Stephen James Hailwood.
Mr Hailwood, aged 49, died in Hutt Hospital's intensive care unit on Sunday morning, several hours after he was involved in an altercation outside The Coach Bar in Upper Hutt's main street.
Detective Sergeant Murray Porter, Upper Hutt CIB, said a post mortem was completed yesterday but it is too early to comment on the preliminary finding.
"The post mortem result needs some further analysis and we still have witness inquiries to complete," he said. "We're getting a better picture of what happened and believe we've identified most of the people who were in The Coach Bar and neighbouring O'Reilly's at the time of the fight."
Police know the identity of the man who was involved in the altercation with Mr Hailwood. It will be several days yet however before police have completed detailed witness statements, background inquiries and finalised the investigation.
Detective Sergeant Porter thanked the public for their help and urged people who were in the area about 9.30pm on Saturday night, and who have yet to speak with police, to contact investigators with any relevant information.
