Appointment of Assistant Commissioner Strategy, Policy and Performance

Grant Nicholls, the current District Commander of Eastern District, has been appointed to the position of Assistant Police Commissioner Strategy, Policy and Performance.

In announcing the appointment today the Commissioner of Police, Howard Broad, said that Assistant Commissioner Nicholls had a proven track record of operational and management experience as well as appropriate degree qualifications.

Assistant Commissioner Nicholls has started his career as a General Duties Constable in Palmerston North in 1985. He moved rapidly through the ranks since qualifying as a Detective in 1989. He was Officer in Charge of Levin Police at the rank of Inspector in 1997-1998, Area Commander of Palmerston North Rural 2000 - 2002 and Area Commander of Palmerston North City 2002-2003 both at the rank of Inspector prior to appointment as District Commander Eastern in 2004.

In February 2005 Mr Nicholls was contingent commander for the second NZ Police rotation deployed to Thailand in relation to the Asian Tsunami. He is also a member of the Commissioner's Counter Terrorism Command cadre. Professional qualifications include Masters Degrees in Public Policy and Administration, and Management. He also holds a Graduate Diploma in Emergency Services Management (with Distinction).

Assistant Commissioner takes up his new position in mid-September. An Acting District Commander for Eastern will be announced shortly and the vacancy will be advertised as soon as possible.
