Courts sanctions little deterrent to underage driver

A boy arrested for his involvement in a so called amateur demolition derby using stolen cars appears to have been unimpressed with court imposed sanctions, he simply went out and stole another car, crashing near Otorohanga this morning.

Three boys, aged 14-15-years old, were arrested yesterday morning after Police recovered two cars stolen from Hamilton and one from Mt Maunganui on O'regan Rd. All the vehicles were stolen and had been damaged

Driven into each other and one was found in a ditch, another in a paddock while the third was used as an attempted getaway vehicle but was too damaged to get far.

Sergeant Andrew Connors of the Otorohanga Police said overnight one of the 14-year-old boys breached bail conditions and stole a Ford Laser from Hamilton.

"This morning we received a call about 5.30am about a car abandoned on SH31, outside Otorohanga, responding officers encountered three boys being treated by ambulance staff at the intersection of Honikiwi Rd.

"It turns out the 14-year-old driver had crashed the car into a bank and the three occupants abandoned the car, picked up by a Good Samaritan who called an ambulance, they were dropped off at the intersection."

Mr Connors said a 13-year-old travelling as a passenger in the car suffered neck injuries in the crash and was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance.

"Two 14-year-olds are currently being interviewed by Police and the driver is facing a variety of charges from theft of a motor vehicle, breaching bail and driving offences causing injury.

"We will be opposing bail when he appears in court today," said Mr Connors.
