Update on body discovery west of Huntly

As investigators commence a scene examination of the area where a person's body was found set alight west of Huntly overnight Waikato Police are appealing for information from the public to assist in identifying the victim.

Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall of the Waikato CIB said emergency services were called to the scene of a fire on Hangapipi Rd, Rotowaro, about 10.05pm.

"A motorist rang emergency services to report a person on fire on the side of the road and that person was found deceased on their arrival. At this stage we believe the body to be that of a young woman of slim build.

"We're working to establish her identity and this is where we need the public's help, this person is someone's daughter and could be someone's sister, partner or even mother and we need to find out who she is not only for our investigation's sake but for her family as well."

Mr Keall said Police would also like to hear from anyone who saw any vehicles or people on Hangapipi Rd between 9.30-10pm particularly near the start of the road where the woman was found.

"We're asking for any nominations of who this person may be or any information of vehicles or suspicious people in the area."

Police investigators have been joined by ESR forensic staff as they commence the scene enquiry this morning.

"A priority for officers who first attended the area overnight was ensuring the integrity of the scene to ensure nothing came into the area to contaminate potential evidence.

"To that end Hangapipi Rd was closed and remains so while the examination is underway, it's too early to say how long this will take but we are grateful for the cooperation of local residents as the enquiry continues."

Anyone with any information on the woman's identity, any suspicious activity in the area or details on what or why this matter has happened is asked to contact the Operation Hangapipi enquiry team at the Huntly Police Station on 07 8287560.

Alternatively information can be left anonymously on the CrimeStoppers crimeline, 0800 555111.
