Restricted Easter bar hours in Canterbury

1 min read

Police in Canterbury say restricted opening hours for bars over the Easter weekend is not an excuse for irresponsible drinking at home.

Unless operating as a restaurant, bars will close at midnight tonight (Thursday 21st April) and remain closed on Good Friday.

Bars will also be closed all day Sunday and not begin trading again until 1.00pm on Monday 25th April (ANZAC Day).

"Our expectation is that bar owners will communicate their opening hours clearly to customers" says Sergeant Al Lawn of the Canterbury Alcohol Strategy and Enforcement team.

"The Easter weekend is a time to focus on family and friends and have a good time, not a bad time.

"Anyone drinking at home needs to watch their consumption and look after their mates.

"There will be plenty of Police resources out there across Canterbury district this weekend and we will not hesitate to take action with respect to antisocial behaviour and offending driven by intoxication.

"Drink-driving will also be a focus for Police who will be out in force on Canterbury roads.

"Applying basic common sense to your drinking means everyone can have a safe weekend" says Sergeant Lawn.
