Investigation says Picton officer's pursuit justified

1 min read

Tasman Police District Commander Superintendent Gary Knowles has welcomed the Independent Police Conduct Authority report into the Police pursuit in Picton on 20 February 2010.

"The IPCA has found that my officer was justified and acting lawfully when he commenced the pursuit of a speeding driver whom he believed to be intoxicated.

"It is extremely disappointing that the fleeing motorcyclist chose to act in such a reckless manner and his subsequent death is regrettable. It is of some comfort that his pillion passenger has survived and no other members of the public were harmed.

Superintendent Knowles said it was never desirable for Police to have to pursue a speeding driver who refused to stop.

"While the IPCA has said the speed involved in the pursuit was undesirable, the officer's actions were found to be lawful."

"In this instance my officer was conducting his duty to protect the public and has my full support."

Superintendent Knowles said the officer's driving ability was never in question and he had since renewed his Gold driver classification.
