Six arrested as Police break burglary operation

1 min read

Christchurch police today arrested six people in an operation against a major burglary ring targeting high-end hair care and fashion products.

A total of 40 police staff were involved in today's operation, which recovered stolen property from two addresses in Avonhead and Islington.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Rae of Canterbury CIB says Operation BAC has been investigating a crime group responsible for thefts worth around $200,000 during late 2010.

The group committed more than 50 offences across Christchurch city. Police allege the suspects specifically targeted clothing, hair care products including GHD hair strengtheners and also electronic equipment from retail stores.

Six suspects involved in the crime group have been located and interviewed in relation to the offending. Those facing charges will appear in Court over the coming weeks.

"This has been a significant effort by the Christchurch CIB investigation team," Detective Senior Sergeant Rae says. "It is a clear signal to criminals that in spite of the disruptions caused by the February earthquake, police are continuing to effectively target criminals in Christchurch.

"This was a large commercial theft and burglary ring and it's a great result to have brought it down so comprehensively."
